FLYING FISH

FLYING FISH Last year my wife and I accompanied my oldest son on a cruise. Once we spent the whole day "at sea," that is to say we were traveling from one port to another. We were many miles from the nearest land. I decided to go onto the deck and just watch the waves and the sun as it faded on the rolling horizon. As I stood on the deck, I began to feel such a sense of inadequacy and melancholy. In the whole scheme of things, in the vast world, and now, in the vast ocean, I began to wonder, "Who am I?" I was but a blip on the screen of humanity. "Why would God concern Himself with me?" "What use did He really have for me, and why was I put on this earth?" At that moment I felt, I imagine, the same feelings that David felt as he wrote in Psalm 8:4, "What is man that you are mindful of him..." It was at that moment I caught a glimpse of something from the corner of my eye. But in a flash it was gone. "What was that?" I thought. And then I saw it again. It appeared to be a bird that was flying very low to the water, just above the wake of the ship. But how could it be? We were perhaps hundreds of miles from the nearest land. I stood in amazement as once again I saw the wings of yet another as it sailed, only inches above the rolling sea. I watched carefully and realized these weren’t birds at all. They were flying fish! I could not break free of the railing, as I continued to scan the surface of the water, hoping to catch sight of another. And alas, I did! And then another and another... Soon I realized how consumed I was with these small, insignificant creatures and that I had just spent a considerable amount of time enjoying their company. It was at that moment God impressed upon my heart that, just as those small fish in the vast ocean had ministered to me, I had the ability and the responsibility to do the same. There were people out there, millions of them, who needed Him. And though I was no person of world renown or exceptional abilities, I was a person who God loved and had saved from a life of despair, and I had, at the very least, that to offer others. In 2 Corinthians 1:4 we are told to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. Each day, we encounter people, often just cruising by, who would be blessed, not necessarily by a flowery sermon or great words of wisdom, but by the glimpse of a life touched by the hand of a Savior, with a willingness to just do the thing for which God has made you.
